Surface Finishes
Anodizing (Type II / Type III)
Electrochemical process creating a durable oxide layer. Type II (standard): 5-25μm thickness, custom colors available. Type III (hard anodizing): 25-150μm, extreme hardness and wear resistance. Excellent for aluminum parts.
Sandblasting / Bead Blasting
Abrasive blasting creates uniform matte surface texture. Removes tool marks and surface imperfections. Options include glass bead, aluminum oxide, and walnut shell media. Achieves Ra 1.6μm - 3.2μm.
Electroplating (Chrome/Nickel/Zinc)
Metallic coating for enhanced appearance and corrosion resistance. Chrome plating for decorative finish, nickel for wear resistance, zinc for corrosion protection. Thickness: 5-25 microns.
Powder Coating
Electrostatic application of thermoset powder coating. Excellent durability, weather resistance, and custom RAL color matching. Thickness: 60-120 microns. Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
Brushed Finish
Directional surface texture for premium aesthetic appearance. Achieved through abrasive belt processing. Popular for consumer electronics, automotive trim, and architectural hardware.
Polishing (Mirror/Satin)
Mechanical polishing to achieve reflective or satin finish. Mirror polish: Ra ≤ 0.1μm. Satin polish: Ra 0.2μm - 0.8μm. Ideal for decorative parts, medical devices, and food-grade equipment.
Passivation
Chemical treatment for stainless steel to remove free iron and enhance corrosion resistance. Citric acid or nitric acid process. Creates protective chromium oxide layer without dimensional change.
Black Oxide
Conversion coating for ferrous metals providing mild corrosion resistance and attractive black finish. Minimal dimensional impact (< 0.5μm). Common for tooling, fasteners, and military components.
Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
- Design internal radii of at least 1/3 of the pocket depth to allow proper tool access and reduce stress concentrations
- Maintain minimum wall thickness of 0.5mm for metals and 0.8mm for plastics to prevent vibration and deflection during machining
- Avoid deep pockets with length-to-diameter ratios exceeding 4:1 to prevent tool deflection and maintain accuracy
- Design features accessible from standard tool orientations (top, side) to minimize setups and reduce cost
- Use standard drill sizes for holes to reduce tooling costs and lead time
- Avoid thin walls and tall, narrow features that are prone to vibration and chatter marks
- Consider workholding: provide flat surfaces or features for clamping to ensure stable machining
- Design undercuts sparingly; if required, keep them simple and accessible with standard tooling
- Specify thread depths not exceeding 1.5x the thread diameter for reliable tapping and thread quality
- Avoid unnecessarily tight tolerances on non-critical features to reduce machining time and cost
